How Points are assigned to Each Club
Every club plays every other club twice, once at home and once away from home. Originally, a victory assigned two points, one point for a tie, and a zero point for a defeat.
Since the 1995-96 season, a win has been worth three points, a draw is for one point, and a defeat is worth zero points. At the end of the season, the club with the most points wins the German championship.
Currently, the top four clubs in the table qualify automatically for the UEFA Champions League group stage. The last two clubs are relegated to the 2. Bundesliga, while the top two teams in the 2. Bundesliga are promoted back to Bundesliga in the following season.
The 16th (third-last) and third-placed teams in the 2. Bundesliga compete in a two-leg play-off competition. The winner of this match will play in the Bundesliga the next season, while the loser will play in the 2. Bundesliga.
Here are the criteria for Bundesliga clubs:
1) The top 4 placed clubs qualify for UEFA Champions League group stage.
2) The club stands at 5th qualify for UEFA Europa League.
